HhHoOoWwWLLLL ya'll been? I know it's been a while since I posted or added any new lyrics or music. Why so long you may ask? Simple answer is the distractions of life or as I call it: OPD = Other Peoples Drama. Spent a lot of time trying to make things work that just don't. Spent a lot of time getting ready for my bands 1st gig only to have it canceled, rescheduled & recanceled again. Spent a lot of time wasted on trying to help those who are bound and determined to drown in their own misery. Spent a TON of time trying to live up to the unrealistic expections of me by my day job and my three part-time jobs. At one point I found myself working almost 20 hours a day. But no more. I'm done with it all and now I am focused more than ever on what I was born to do ... to write, record, play & perform. Simple fact is we're born, we live, we die. That's it. As long as I live and breathe, I'm going to love, laugh, write and play.

So now that the distractions are gone I have been working every day on recording my parts for our band, The Scandal Hounds, first CD. We have twelve songs we are working on and they are coming along better than I had hoped. When I write a song, I hear a finished version in my head but so far what we have recorded far exceeds what I heard when I wrote these songs. It's going to be a CD you can enjoy from beginning to end. Each song is strong enough to stand alone as a single but we have worked hard on making the CD flow from one song to another. Each song is a mind bomb that is going to leave you craving for the next. So stay tuned my musical friends because the best is yet to come.

#Blog | Notes from the Studio & Vote for Next Song

Good news my fellow head food cravers, I have a new song coming out soon. Due to family commitments our band, The Scandal Hounds, will not be practicing for the next several weeks. This gives me some time to finish several demos that I am working on. The first song coming is “All the Weapons”. I have the drums, guitars & vocals recorded. I have been spoiled the past few months by Brian, the bass player in The Scandal Hounds, because he has been laying down such great bass lines on the songs I have written for the band. Now anything I come up with fails in comparison. Brian is going to help me out this week to see what he can come up with. This will be the first time I have worked on a song demo where I have not written & recorded everything by myself.

Once I finish the demo for “All the Weapons” I have several song demos that I have been working on to finish. My choices are a new song called “Gears of War”, “B-Move Love Song” (formally titled “Jezebel”), “Beautifully Inked” and a very interesting song I have been working on behind-the-scenes for months with a working title of “Cream Soda”. I was on a break at the studio enjoying a rum & cream soda when I came up with the idea, so hence the title.

“Cream Soda” is a mix of rock, industrial, hip-hop & pop. I know it sounds crazy but it works. So far it has seven different drums lines all in different styles that separate and weave together. A bass line done on a keyboard that was played through a wall of Marshall guitar amps with two different distortion pedals plus five different guitar parts all played through different guitars through as many different guitar amps that I could get my hands on. I like to do something different with each song and this one is completely different than anything else I have written. I still have to write lyrics & come up with a true title for this song.

I am calling upon all my fellow head food cravers to vote for which song I should work on for my next mind bomb. Your choices are:

#Blog | And Then There Were Four

Greetings my fellow head food cravers. Been a crazy past few weeks. But I shall spare the bordom of the details and get straight to the good stuff. Our band, The Scandal Hounds, has added a new member! We welcome into our ranks a truly gifted guitar player by the name of Mike O'Malley! Not only is Mike a great all-around guitar player but a great guitar teacher too. Check out his website at http://bluestoshred.com - lots of great stuff there for you fellow string pickers. We have only had a few band practices together but with Mike adding his style to ours we went from a damn good three piece band to a "Damn! did you hear that" kind of band. We sounded so good I found myself forgeting my lyrics because I was having too much fun listening to how we sounded when we played.

The even better good new is we have got all the pieces we need and are going to start recording soon and to be playing live soon as well. We have one full set of all orginal songs ready to go and are currently working on our second set of all orignal songs as well. Mike has brought us a song he wrote called "Without You" that we have added to our second set. Mike will be singing lead on the song with me doing some backs-ups. It is a great song and it will be nice to have a song where I can take a break on the vocals.

#Blog | It's Good to be Back, Baby!

I want to start by saying I hope every one had a great holiday and a very merry super happy new year! I am a bit disappointed with 2010. Mainly because I was not able to accomplish what I set out to do. I wanted to release an EP, a solo CD and a CD with my band The Scandal Hounds. But I did accomplish some private goals. The main of which was to improve my vocals and I feel with the upcoming releases I have done that and can't wait for you all to hear the new songs.

The main reason I was unable to accomplish my main goals was time. I have come to realize time is something I need to get better at. With working a full-time job, two part-time studio jobs, raising a son plus a solo career and a band is just too much. Have no fear my friends for I am in no way giving up, just gonna make a few healthy changes. The first of these changes is that I am going to be leaving both my part-time studio jobs. It is with a heavy heart that I decided to do so because I work with some great people and have had the chance to meet a lot of new musical friends but I it's time I said goodbye and focus on what I want to do. Plus the strain of 80 hour work weeks the past two years has taken a toll on me that I simply just can't do anymore. I will always cherish my time there and will never forget the opportunity they gave me along with the knowledge they shared.

The second change I am going to make is to focus more on the band than my solo career. I was given the opportunity to join a friend's band on stage for a new years eve show and it reminded me how much that is what I want to do. Get out in front of a crowd and blow em' away with my fellow brothers-in-arms. I also realized that night that I don't want to get out there live with any one else but my brothers Brian, on bass, and Damian on drums. Playing again with these guys over the past year has been more rewarding and fun than I can describe. An honor and a privilege would be a better description. I can take a good song to them and they find ways to make it a great song. I am blown away some times when I play with them at how amazing we sound together. I think once you all get to hear what we have been working on you will agree and once you get to see us live you be asking why I didn't do this in the first place. This will also help my songwriting. No longer will I have to write all the parts of a song plus spend time on arrangements. Brian and Damian are so strong in what they do plus have such amazing instincts that they always find a way to make a song our own. So trust me when I say my fellow music fans to jump on The Scandal Hounds band wagon and get ready for the start of one helluva ride in 2011.

While I will be releasing less solo material I will still be sharing the song demos of the new stuff I bring to the boys. In all honesty I never wanted to be a solo act. I became one out of necessity. I now will be able to focus more on songwriting which is also something that has been a victim to my schedule. I have been writing new songs like crazy lately. They are coming to me some times faster than I can play or write the ideas down. They have come so fast that I have not been able to focus on what they are saying to me to write the lyrics. In the last three weeks wile my computer has been down I have written 15 new songs from beginning to end but have had no time to write lyrics for any of them. I am really looking forward into having the time to dive head first into them to find what they want to say. So stay tuned my fellow head food connoisseurs because there is going to be a slew of new music to feast upon!

Wishing you all the best in 2011 and I thank each and every one of you for all your support on 2010. I can't thank you all enough for everything each of you have helped inspire me to do and to be.

#Blog | A Time to be Thankful & a Time to Shine

Time. The one thing in life I will always want more of, but will never find. Like the time I set aside to get things done, where does it go? Seems like I am always fighting with time. Like time itself is an ex-girlfriend who loves nothing more than to hate me. There are a few recent events in my life that have caused an even larger battle then the one I am already waging with time.

The company I work for at my day job was recently sold. Thankfully we all got to keep our jobs and at the same pay. The catch is, that I now work an extra hour & a half each day. That hour & a half used to be my practice time. I have adjusted to the new hours and have kept up my practice time. The down side is that has left little time for friends and to finish songs.

This has caused me to reflect on my dream of being a musician. I work a full-time job and two part-time jobs to support myself and my dream. Working so much leaves little time to really enjoy what I live to do. All that time I spend frustrated, stressed out & tired could be so better spent working on songs. But if I don't work then I can't pay for studio time, the thousand boxes of strings I go through or even the food to fuel myself to do so. Just then, at these moments of self doubt & anger over the frustration of daily life, I listen to the first mix of a song. A song that I have spent every second of every minute I could possibly steal and it all becomes worth it. That moment when all that lost time pays off. The moment the song finally comes to life.

To hear the song start to breathe from the first note and cherish every second as it comes to rest on its final beat. This is when time shines on me. For as I listen to that first mix, time losses all meaning for me. It no longer exists in the realm outside my headphones. Then the song is over and I look up to see it is 3am and I no longer have the time to work on it. But in the end I am thankful for time. Thankful I had enough of it to find my way back to what I truly live for, and most appreciative for when it shines.

I wish you all a very merry Happy Thanksgiving and hope you remember to add an extra few days a year to celebrate what your thankful for.

#Blog | Notes From the Studio

I am happy to say that the vocal work I did this past Saturday at the studio was some of the best I have ever done. The one thing that really bothers me about my music is my singing. I didn't worry about it so much when I was recording demos because demos are pretty much just rough sketches of a song. Plus most of the time I was recording vocals as late as 5am after I had recorded the drums, bass & guitars. The vocals I sang were mainly just for reference but I allowed myself to be talked into releasing those demos by friends in an effort to get my name out there, so to speak.

Part of the problem is that at the studios where I record and at home, is that I do not have access to a true vocal microphone. With all my money tied up in studio time I am unable to buy a "true" vocal microphone. I do feel that with the equipment I have available to me that I have found the best way to use them but that I have also pushed what they can do to the max. What is missing in my vocals are the growls and the nuances I put into my singing. No matter how subtle or hard I emphasize these, they are just not coming through on the final take.

The only way to fix the problem, as far as I can see, is to sing better. Take out the subtleties and go for a stronger more solid vocal performance. I have been spending at least one hour every day just singing. Focusing on how I sing every single word. I feel that greatly helped this past Saturday's vocal takes for "The Fracture" and "Just a Dream Away (Mariann's Song)". Stay tuned to hear the results because I hope to release both songs in the next two weeks.

I just wrapped up getting every thing done for the release of my first single "Kinda Derange" and thought I'd share an update on the songs to come. I want to thank every one for their support and hope you continue to do so by buying my first single "Kinda Derange". I am a one man operation and need your continued support to help carry on. Enough with the shameless begging, now on to the update.

Song: "Just a Dream Away (Mariann's Song)" - I have gotten all the instruments recorded except for the solo guitar sprinkles that I like place. Finished the final arrangement and first rough mix this week. I am going into the studio next Saturday to record the vocals. Target release date is November 22nd 2010.
Song: "The Fracture" - Everything is finished on this song except for vocals. We had some issues at the studio plus I was sick at the time. I plan to re-record the vocals this coming Saturday as well. Target release date November 22nd 2010.
Song: "Get It Right" - This was to be my first single but due to a glitch at the studio plus a massive computer crash, this song had to be re-recorded. All the music has been re-recorded and I am in process of working on the first rough mix to record vocals with. If there is enough time I will be doing vocals this coming Saturday as well but if I run out of time the next session for vocals will be on November 16th. Target release date is early December 2010.
Song: "Aphrodite" - As I mentioned before, that I had a massive computer crash, "Aphrodite" was another victim in that crash. The drum track was lost with the crash. New vocals where recorded before the crash and thankfully survived. I hope to re-record the drums on November 16th. Target release date is December 2010. I am also doing another version of this with my band The Scandal Hounds. The scandalized version has a release date of Spring 2011.
New Song: "Vampire Song #9 (Working Title)" - This is the first of two new songs written last week. I have started recording this weekend. So far only the drums & the first of the guitars have been recorded but so far this song is really coming together. I am not happy with the title so far and may have another contest for fans to help me choose the title of the song with the winner receiving a free download when the song is released. Target release date is late December 2010. I am also working on another version of this song with my band The Scandal Hounds as well.
New Song: "The Remedy" - The second of two new songs I wrote last week that is still in development. So far I have not started recording this song but have begun to work out the arrangement and have finished the lyrics. The target release date is for late December 2010 or early 2011. There will be a Scandal Hounds release of this song too.

I want to thank every one again for again for their continued support. #Blog | Is It Better To Burn Out Than To Fade Away?

I wish I could mentally send in my blogs. Especially when I have been burning the candle at both ends as much as I have been over the past several weeks. On top of working my full time job, the several part time studio jobs plus practicing with the band on a weekly basis, I am now having to mix all my own songs before bringing them in to be mastered.

Over the past several weeks I have been putting in 18 to 20 hours a day. Needless to say this has taken away a bit of the magic that music holds for me. I now have no time to write new songs which what I love most to do most. Songwriting helps me get through those ups and downs of day-to-day life. So far thses past few weeks with out that outlet has been hell.

I came to realize that all the pressure I have been under is of my own doing. I worked & fought my whole life to get to this point. If I don't find a way to balance it all, I will be the one to undue all my hard work. So I have decided to stop focusing my efforts towards a CD. I will instead focus on releasing one single at a time. This way I can still put out my new songs in demo format for all to hear plus take my time to make each single the best that I can.

#Blog | "Name My Song" Contest

Calling all fans, friends & would-be songwriters! I need your help in writing my next song. I find myself spread a bit too thin as of late to come up with anything for a new song I wrote earlier this week. At one time or another we have though, heard or saw something that made us think to ourselves - "Hey, that would be a great title for a song!" I need you to gather all those kind of thoughts and post them here so I can harvest one to be the title of my new song.

"So what do I get if you choose my song title, Wolfgang?" The winner of this contest will have their name immortalized in the title of the song. For example, Let's say your name is Sara and your contest title entry is "The Greatest Love of All". The song I have written would now be called: "The Greatest Love of All (Sara's Song)". But there is more! If you send along lyrics to go with your song title and i use those, I will share writers credit on the song with you. Which means that should the song sell a million copies, you would recieve a share of that revenue.

Now for a bit about the song. The music is a kind of haunting ballad that brings to mind the emotions of desire, want, need and love. I was going to post the music but then I decided that using the description of the music would be better to spark your imaginations.

All you need to do to enter the contest is to simply post your title or lyrics with title in a comment to this blog post. The contest starts today and will run until Friday, September 10th 2010. The winner will be announed on Twitter for #MusicMonday on September 13th.

#Blog | Time Costs Money & Money Costs Time

I have a confession to make. I think I may have bitten off more than I can chew. My plan to record a solo CD while working on & writing songs for the band is not going quite like I hoped it would. The main reason for this "hitch in the giddyup" is time and money. A combination of two things that I have had to rage against all my life. A wonderous maze every serious musician finds themself in from one time or another. Why you may ask? Becuase to record in a studio you need money. How do you get that money? by working which leads to less time available to prepare for your time at the studio. This is the circle I find myself always spinning in ... around & around & around.

Good news is I have several songs close to completion for my solo CD. All songs have new instruments & vocals recorded. I am currently working on mixing them all at the same time. This mixing process is taking longer than I thought. The reason being is that while I like a final mix of a song one day, the next day I hate it. Oddly enough I find being the judge of my own music to be way more difficult.

I hope to soon release the following songs as singles:

#Blog | What Goes In, Must Come Out

To say that the past few weeks for me personally have been turbulent would be an understatement but I’m not one to whine about such things. Instead, I work them out in a song. The result has been the lyrics posted lately for the songs “No Parachute” and “The Fracture”. I wrote those along with more than several others of the past week or so. Each one addressing a different issue that life throws at all if us.

For me the songs are personal so I decided I will record the demos for these with just and an acoustic guitar. I don’t get a chance to do this very often and truth be told it is my favorite way to perform. The reason being is none of the subtleties are lost like they can when all the other instruments are added. The second, being that the performance is all up to me. There is something almost mystical when you have no other band members or instruments to lean on and every note is all up to you. You either bring your A-game and nail it or go down in flames.

In the next several days I hope to have at least two acoustic demos uploaded for you listening enjoyment. Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.

#Blog | The Good & The Bad

Today’s blog in sponsored by frustration, “Just when you think you had had enough - you can always count on the good folks at frustration to add some more”. I am bummed to report that all recording with out band, The Scandal Hounds, has been suspended for several weeks due to technical reasons beyond our control. Thanks to the poor planning and even worse implementation of our cities electrical system our instruments are generating a buzz that we can not remove in the recording process.

This joyous nugget of frustration comes on the heels of the news that our drummer has been called out of town on work for two to three weeks. We were really hitting our stride as a group and making some really great music happen. To break out continuity like this is something we are good enough to recover from but extremely frustrating for all of us none the less.

The good news from all of this is that I can finish the eight new songs I am working on plus focus on the next songs for my studio time plus work out my guitar solo for a song called “One Horse Town” by The Scandal Hounds. So far I have been able to finish demos of songs by sheer will and talent alone. With this extra time I now have, I will be able to finish the overall idea for the song on the demo instead of just throwing everything together.

#Blog | Stumbling Across The Past

I got home tonight to perform a ritualistic cleansing at my place. After finally recovering from being as sick as I have ever been. I sat down to work on two new songs that I wrote. The first being the music for "No Parachute", to which the lyrics can be found on an earlier blog entry. The second is a song called "Hauntingly Familiar", for which I am still working out the lyrics but the music is finished. I also came up with a chorus and bridge section for a third new song I have not been able to get out of my head. The main guitar riff for the verse has been playing in my head for days. It felt great to finally get it out and to have the song structure done. There are several lines written but no real set-in-stone lyrics for it yet. So far the song's working title is "Favorite Pill".

After working on these I took a break, then went back to play. All of a sudden a song I wrote years ago that I had almost but all forgotten about came pouring out of me, lyrics and all. The song is called "No Sale Today". It's a song from my old singer/songwriter days on the streets of Minneapolis, MN. Not long before then I had a major drug overdose that by some miracle, I survived. Once I recovered I took to the streets with my guitar and dove head first into songwriting. Needless to say I still looked like a full blown addict. Everyone with something to push was in my face day after day while I played. So I wrote a song that I would sing as loud as I could to drive them away. That song was "No Sale Today".

After a wonderful re-visitation from "No Sale Today" another old song I wrote came rushing out called "Impaired". I really had forgotten this song but every note, chord & lyric came flooding back. During the time before my overdose I had several relationships end as horribly as you can imagine. I had awoken one morning after the last break up to find myself starring at my own reflection in the mirror. I started singing to my reflection and recorded every word that came out. I then sat down with my guitar and this amazing guitar riff came out of no where that matched the words I had recorded. Literally the song wrote itself to the words I had recorded. My roommates couldn't believe what they heard & came rushing out of their rooms telling me to play it again and again. They along with a few ex-girlfriends all thought they knew who the song was written for. But I kept the truth to myself. The song turned out to be me singing to myself. The song was a warning that if I didn't wake up from what I was doing that no one, including myself, would ever love me.

I am posting the lyrics for both these songs and will be recording both on my solo CD or with our band The Scandal Hounds. I think the boys in the band will really like "Impaired" and I can't wait to hear what they come up with for it. On personal note I would like to ask you, kind reader, to post a comment about this blog or a comment on the lyrics for either song. I know people are reading my lyrics and listening to my songs but none of you have spoken up. Do you like the lyrics, love em' or hate them? Feel free to bash, praise or post indifference. I want to know what you think.
